that time a bat got into our house...

And I went bat-shit crazy (please excuse my language - I just couldn't help myself).

{pretty hot, I know}

Joel successfully took care of the bat with a bat (he had opened the front door in hopes it would leave peacefully but 'twas not happening). While he was upstairs trying to get it though, it got away and flew downstairs into the living room straight toward me (or so it seemed). I screamed bloody murder, and as evidenced above, spilled my wine all over myself as I dashed toward our sunroom (back left) and slammed the door. I don't remember the last time I was so frightened, my heart was beating out of my chest! Joel said he has never heard a more genuine, blood-curdling scream, that it topped anything he'd heard in a horror film - haha! Pretty ridiculous. Thank God Joel was home because obviously I wouldn't have been able to remedy the situation on my own. I was quite impressed (and turned on) by my man swooping in and saving the day.

Has this ever happened to you guys? What did you do? I'm hoping to never encounter a bat indoors again, though it did make for a photo that many people seem to have gotten quite a kick out of.

  1. ok so this story may freak you out but I'm going to tell you anyway...

when i was in elementary school, my family & another family was staying at a lake cabin. My friend and I were sleeping on the floor in sleeping bags in the loft/attic bedroom and her parents were in the larger bed in the room

Shortly after turning off the lights, my friend's mom is whispering "there's something crawling on my back..."

My friend's dad flips the light switch on and pulls back the covers. On my friend's mom's back is a BABY bat.

"Don't move!" my friend's dad says and he grabs a cup from the bathroom and trapped it and released it.

It was actually kind of cute.

But I have NO idea how my friend's mom stayed as calm as she was... later she said she was kind of in shock.

  2. Hahahaha! Oh my gosh!!! I have NEVER experienced that (thank goodness or else I would faint).

I did once run from a huge flock of bats. That was INTENSE.

  3. Oh no!!!! I HAVE been through this before, when I was in college! We were living in a two story house and this bat got it and was flying all around and going crazy. Well, my two female roommates and I FREAKED out, and were screaming, and our male roommate was the one that stayed calm and trapped it in a pillowcase and then let it go outside. It was so scary! I don't blame you one bit for screaming! Yikes.

  4. We had a bat that lived in our office-- they came in from the roof. I thought it was cute but everyone else was freaking about rabies!

  5. eek! So glad Joel was home too! I've only had mice in the house.

But I did find a dead bat in a house I was seeing with a realtor, kind of funny because our friends bought the house and I think about it every time I'm in that room...

  6. WOW! I would have been pretty freaked out too! That picture is hilarious :) Sucks that you spilled your wine though.

We have gotten birds in our garage before, and Rhett tries to guide them out with a broom. I'd leave them in there, but Rhett doesn't want to get poop on his truck :) hahaha

  7. Yikes! Glad Joel was around to do his protective duty thing! We have had 3 bats in our home in the past 6 years. Our attic is nice and sealed now though. Yeah, the last bat woke us up at 2am by being IN OUR BED. That pretty much was the last straw. Especially after weeks of rabies shots for the whole crew. PS. most bats are actually protected species... I know way too much about them now.

  9. Bah ha ha ha... this is hilarious. sorry, but it is. I mean, as long as you can get the wine out of your shirt. And why the hell have so many of your readers had close encounters with bats? I find that odd and also fantastically amusing. thanks for the laughter girl. you rock! xo

  10. THREE times this happened in our house in just two years. Egads. It happened just last week — I was woken up at 3 in the morning by a bat swooping in circles around our bedroom. I feel your terror!
