This year, Joel and I are committed to finally putting a dent in our crippling debt, starting with credit cards. In order to make this happen, we have to be extremely strict with our spending. This means no new clothes/shoes/accessories/etc. for me. Yikes. I have a pretty serious weakness for clothes and over the past several months have spent way too much money on them. I find that once I buy one item, after it has been awhile, it opens up the flood gates. I never seem to be quite satisfied - there's always that one other thing that I "need" to "complete" my wardrobe. It's pretty sickening.
It's been a few weeks now since I've put myself on this spending freeze, and it has already been an extremely positive thing for me. Because of our situation, pretty much every time I buy something for myself that I don't need I feel guilt. So it is a relief to not feel that anymore. When I take a look at my closet now, I can't help but feel extremely thankful for/undeserving of the super nice clothes I have. I feel contentment instead of want and that is a beautiful, freeing feeling.
That said, I know there will be times in the coming months that I will feel the urge to splurge. So I thought that one fun way to fight that urge would be to join the Coast to Coast challenge on Instagram (#coasttocoastchallenge) as shared with me by the oh-so-lovely and inspiring (not to mention rad) Brooke of Pure and Noble. The challenge is all about remixing your current wardrobe in new ways. There are two themes each week (past ones include dots, classy casual and winter whites). If you'd like to follow along, my instagram is @meganlane84. I likely will not do every challenge but would like to try to do one at least one each week. It'd be great if some of you joined as well - be sure to let me know if you do!

Haha! JUST yesterday I told my husband, "I'm going on a spending freeze. I want a new Mac Book and now feel guilty about it."
Seriously considering this project. Hmm....
*not haha
That is a REALLY cute sweater! And I'm the same way with clothes buying. I just have to avoid going shopping for anything other than groceries. Hopefully someday we'll be secure enough that I won't get that annoying guilty feeling for buying things I don't essentially "need"!
We've been on a spending freeze for a while, but let up about a month ago when I needed to buy a few maternity pieces. However, I have been rediscovering some pieces and thankfully a few friends shared some of their maternity clothes with me too. I've been wanting to try the Coast to Coast challenge and heard about it from Brooke too!
Ugh!! I know!!! I really must curb my spending too!! 2013 is going to be the year of spending less...hopefully! ;)
PS I love this outfit!!
Good for you!
We have been on a somewhat casual spending freeze after suddenly being too broke to buy ramen for a couple of days! ha ha.
But you know, it does feel good to not feel bad. And to save money and pay things off, and be happy grownups, going somewhere in life.
Your sweater is super cute.
Can't wait to see these new posts!
oh that site is awesome! i may have to join in...
I too have a bit of a shopping love. I mean, I by no means drop money every week but I love window shopping. and I really don't need anything but I just love clothes & fashion. :/
We're going to Europe in March and I know we need to continue to save like crazy...
